Hey there, my name is Bridget MacKay. I’m an attorney at MacKay Dressler here in Petaluma, California. And today I want to talk a little bit about giving to your grandchildren through your trust. This is a question I get often in client meetings where grandparents want to leave something directly to grandchildren. And you actually can do that. You don’t have to go the traditional route of trickle-down theory of giving it to your children and therefore giving it to your grandchildren. Many grandparents these days are giving direct gifts to grandchildren. The concern comes because they’re often younger. So, they’re not even adults yet. And there is an easy solution to that in your trust. You can provide in your trust that they get a share and it is held in trust specifically for them. And in that trust, you can also determine when they get that money at
a different age or over two different age distributions. You can further refine that trust around how they get the money or what they can use it for. So, if it’s before that first distribution, you can specify that it could only be used for education or a trade school or a vacation, whatever it may be. You can really get creative. It’s really only dependent on what intent you have for that grandchild and for that money you’re giving them. What is the legacy you want to leave?
