Hey, my name is Bridget MacKay. I’m an attorney here at MacKay Dressler in Petaluma. And today I want to talk to you about your parents. So, I often have clients whose parents are still alive, and they don’t know whether their parents have a plan. And I find this very surprising and scary. So let’s talk a little bit about that.
If you have an elder parent, someone is in their seventies, eighties, nineties, and you’re not sure whether they have a plan, uh, that’s not good because ultimately what I’ve seen is when things go down, they become incapacitated or even pass away. Uh, the family scrambles around and doesn’t know what to do. And so, my clients are often as the adult children, very much stressed out, dealing with a lot of chaos.
So, I want to encourage you in this video blog to have a conversation with your parents. If you don’t know or you do know that they have a plan but you’ve never seen it, you don’t know who’s in charge, you don’t know who’s making health decisions, you don’t know who’s going to take over financially if one of them has a stroke suddenly or has a cognitive decline, you need to know these things. And I know that it may be a difficult conversation talking to your parents about having their plan, but ultimately it helps everyone, including them, so that when these incidents show up in your life or in their life, you know exactly what to do, who to get ahold of, and where things are gonna go.
So this is my push to stop keeping this conversation private or feeling like you’re being greedy or rude because ultimately what you’re trying to do is protect them and yourselves. Thank you for listening.
