Who is your successor trustee? So this is the person who is paying bills, selling property, gathering your assets to pay for a long-term care need, or if you’ve passed away, distributing it to the people in your family. And this isn’t any small job and it isn’t something you should just pick your favorite child or your oldest child for. You want someone who understands you, understands what you want, can handle projects like liquidating assets, cleaning out a house, and can manage family dynamics. That’s another piece that trustees have to deal with when they’re put in that role.
So, when you’re choosing who this person is, first choose good, choose right. Choose the person that you will trust to do everything that needs to be done in this job. But also, let everybody else know who it is so there’s no shocks or concerns. Because oftentimes, the person you choose is not the person everybody expected you to choose.
